I didn’t grow up with music in my life; like my grandmother wasn’t blasting Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, or Roberta Flack on Saturday mornings…I started really listening to music in the 90′s to artist like Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, and Mariah Carey.
Some might say that my “music library” is very limited because I know very few songs by Gladys Kinght, Chaka Khan, or Tina Turner. I mean sue me for not knowing the words to Aretha Franklin’s “Chain Of Fools,” or Patti LaBelle‘s “Body Language.” But not all hope is lost. True I could belt out all the words to any Beyonce song, but I can also sing along if Patti LaBelle’s “The Right Kinda Lover,” or Diana Ross’ “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” comes on.
Over the last few years there has been tons of artists/groups that have caught and kept my attention from Monifah to TLC {R.I.P. Left Eye}. But my all time favorite artist is Aaliyah {R.I.P.} her music captivated me from her first single “Back and Forth.” With songs like “One in a Million,” “The One I Gave My Heart To,” and “We Need a Resolution,” her voice will never be forgotten.
I recently wrote a list of my favorite Female Artists and Groups. This list includes artists from Jill Scott to P!nk, Janet Jackson to Jennifer Lopez {yes I said J. Lo; I have to admit I brought all of her albums}, and Brandy to Keyshia Cole, and a number of other artist. A few all girl groups also made the list: 702, Cherish, Blaque, Total, Escape, and even 3LW.
There are several artist that I will always LOVE {both new and old}:
- Mya
- Chante Moore
